Bathroom

IMG_4371

Despite the small size of the room, guests will be pleased to find that the bathroom is actually of a decent size. Though the bathroom isn’t expansive, it is in no way cramped at all and this comes as a good surprise as guests will not have to bash and bang their way through showers, like in a small stateroom of a cruise ship. The black floor tiles and the somewhat glossy quartz sink top all add up to give the bathroom a slightly more upmarket feel and this makes it look more modern and better furnished than the room is. The only eyesore will probably be the bathroom door, which looks almost like the door of an old student dormitory and this definitely does not blend in well with the rest of the bathroom. If I had to comment, I would even say that the bathroom, in general, looks better than the room and it makes me wonder why didn’t the management of Lost World Hotel Ipoh put in more effort in designing or upgrading the individual rooms.

Attached hair dryer

The sink area features ample space for guests to store their own toiletries and belongings and once again, I can see how such a design serves families well, as usually, these are the guests that have to pack more of their own toiletries. Of course, for those who are lazy to bring your own toiletries, Lost World Hotel does provide the basic necessities in the bathroom. Guests can find small bottles of shampoo, bath gel, toothbrushes and even a distastefully packed spare roll of toilet paper tucked neatly into the corner of the sink area. Ladies will also appreciate the fixed hair dryer and sanitary bag that comes as standard for their convenience.

The shower area is also of an adequate space, with a shower reminiscent of a rainfall shower provided to add that little bit of class and luxury. Over here, guests will also find another set of shampoo and shower gel for their convenience. What I appreciate the most is that the shower area is separated from the rest of the bathroom by a solid glass panel and not just a shower curtain. This ensures that the water you splash around during a shower will not wet the rest of the bathroom and making it a slippery and humid place. Also, considering that many of Lost World Hotel Ipoh’s guests are families with kids, who tend to take messy showers, this is in fact a very practical and thoughtful design.

Facilities

Since Lost World Hotel Ipoh seems like a big hotel associated to an exciting theme park, most guests will expect the hotel to be fully equipped with facilities that almost all hotels will have. Perhaps many will even draw comparison to the ever so popular First World Hotel located at Genting Highlands as both share very similar traits. However, to my disdain, Lost World Hotel lacks even the most basic facilities such as a small pool or a fitness centre. In this area, it really should be called a hostel or motel instead of a hotel, as it is devoid of any other thing except for rooms. Of course, excessive criticism is still unwarranted as almost all guests staying at the hotel will visit the Lost World of Tambun theme park, which is home to more facilities and fun than the average hotel can provide. The only downside is that there are, ultimately, still some guests who treat Lost World Hotel Ipoh as a pit stop for the night and these are the people who will appreciate some facilities to add value to their stay there.

The Lost World of Tambun is indeed a “world” on its own. With a theme park, water park, adventure park , petting zoo and many other attractions inside, guests are truly treated to a world of amusement and wonder. Children will indubitably enjoy themselves thoroughly and parents will also not be bored. The only catch is that entrance to these enjoyable attractions are not free for hotel guests and those who want to enter have to pay for a standard public priced ticket. This is not unreasonable though, as the hotel rates are pretty low, starting from just MYR530 per night before promotions and discounts.

Thankfully, Lost World Hotel is not that all stingy and to make up for its lack of in-house facilities, all guests are given one free entry to the Lost World Hot Springs, which is only open at night till late. As nice as it sounds, the hot springs are definitely far from what you can expect from in countries like Japan and Korea because it really is just a portion of the water park in the Lost World of Tambun filled with hot water. However, it is still a happening place at night and instead of a zen and tranquil ambience, guests are treated to a lively atmosphere with exciting fire performances thrown into the package. Over there, guests have a choice of various pools such as a foot bath and full body baths with various temperatures. A word of caution though, during weekends and public holidays, the hot springs can get pretty crowded, rowdy and noisy considering the size of the hotel and the number of guests that have free access to it. Also, some guests might find a slightly unpleasant smell in some of the pools and this really makes me question the quality and standards of maintenance of the management. This free offering is by no means perfect but it is a nice gesture and those who find themselves bored in their room can definitely make use of this free perk.

Dining

Just like the facilities in Lost World Hotel Ipoh, dining options are non existent. Yes, there are no dining options available, or at least there are non directly accessible from the room. This is because the hotel only offers one single restaurant cum cafe, which is located across the road, by the side of the theme park. Simply put, guests should make sure that their tummies are filled daily before retiring to the rooms or risk having to starve throughout the night. To make things worse, it is already known that the location of the hotel is literally in its own “lost world” as there are no dining options nearby and Ipoh’s numerous street food stalls are inaccessible unless you have means of private transportation.

Thankfully, all hope is not lost as there is one restaurant that guests can visit, albeit not for late night snacks and that is the Garden Terrace located within the premises of the Lost World of Tambun.

Garden Terrace is a pretty large dining place, with a sheltered alfresco sitting capable of holding a large crowd of diners. The ambience there is pretty relaxed, as diners will be engulfed in a nature based theme amidst greenery, rock façades and wooden furniture. This really ties in with the idea of transporting visitors and hotel guests into another world and I must say that the management has done this well.

Needless to say, this is also the place where guests of Lost World Hotel Ipoh have breakfast and every morning, the buffet spread prepared is a sumptuous one, with a myriad of food choices to choose from. I must admit that I was surprised to discover that the food served was not just restricted to local cuisines. In fact, guests can choose from western themed dishes such as cereal, sausages and hash browns and also asian food including Malaysia’s local delights of nasi goreng and mee goreng. There is even a live egg station where a chef will cook up your favourite style of eggs. Such a service is only usually found in better hotels and this is one area that Lost World Hotel Ipoh will surprise guests. The quality of the food served is also decent and the capacious restaurant space means that even though this is a big hotel with potentially many guests, having to jostle and squeeze to get food will rarely become a problem. I have to admit that breakfast at the Garden Terrance was probably one of the better parts during my stay at the Lost World Hotel and though this will not make up for the pitfalls if the hotel in terms of room quality and convenience of location, it sure is a nice thing to wake up to in the morning. Even so, nothing is perfect and the one biggest flaw is that there is no sheltered walkway connecting the hotel to the restaurant which is located across the road. With this, I really wonder what happens on a rainy morning and how guests will be able to enjoy the breakfast spread.

Our Take

Lost World Hotel Ipoh is a hotel that probably will not suit the tastes of those who travel more widely and enjoying lodging in finer and more comfortable accommodation choices. Yet, it is the only gateway to the ever so popular Lost Would of Tambun, as it is the only hotel offering direct access to the theme park with free use of the night time hot springs and this is a major draw for many tourists. The hotel is in no way luxurious and refined and in many aspects, it just seems more like a low end budget hotel when you put in on an international scale. However, guests will have to make do with what is provided and I feel that the only thing that can be done is to take some action in order to make your stay there more comfortable. This can be achieved by picking up the little snippets of advice, such as packing your own snacks and having sufficient to eat before retiring to the room for the night. However, should you be adequately prepared or are used to hotels of similar standards, you will still find the hotel rather practical and comfortable. If your purpose is to enjoy a day or two at the Lost World of Tambun without having to worry about rushing off before it gets dark, then Lost World Hotel Ipoh should provide you with a good night’s rest before you head off the next day.
