Bathroom

The bathroom failed to wow me as much as the room did when I first entered but nonetheless, it felt modern and luxurious. I particularly liked the use of a frosted sliding glass door for the bathroom, which helped greatly in alleviating any space constraints that might occur with a swinging door commonly used in other hotels.

Though unlike the more luxurious marble-clad bathrooms of some other hotels, the bathroom in Wangz Hotel featured very clean and modern tiles which I felt were more than sufficient. The bathroom was generally very spacious and though it did lack a bathtub, it compensated with an enormous shower area with both a hand shower and a rainfall shower. The water temperature was also excellent, with warm water coming out of the shower consistently and at a comfortable pressure. One side of the bathroom also features a floor to ceiling window facing the road to let in copious amounts of natural sunlight, greatly brightening the bathroom and reducing the need for excessive lighting. Shy guests do not have to worry as the metal “grill” right outside the windows would prevent voyeuristic eyes and should you still feel uncomfortable, a blind can be easily lowered to fully cover the glass.

The amenities provided were nothing out of the extraordinary, but what you will be pleased about is the attention to detail offered by Wangz Hotel Singapore. This is shown by the fact that the hotel offers luxury bath amenities by Molten Brown and not just some self-branded toiletries. Thus, guests can be guaranteed with a good bath using quality amenities. Provisions include what you can expect from a usual 4 star hotel, such as dental kits, a shower cap, etc. What I particularly liked was that the basin counter top did not feel “crowded” as the amenities were nicely arranged with ample space to place your personal belongings. Female guests would also enjoy the use of the adjustable vanity mirror with magnifying and lighting functions.

Facilities

Needless to say, Wangz hotel does have facilities just like any other hotel, but I must admit that this was also the area that left me slightly disappointed.

The gym is located on the ground floor, hidden behind a small “slip road” beside the lift lobby.

The first thing I noticed about the gym was the shocking small size of it. It was surely no bigger than the size of the bedroom and in my opinion, the gym would have trouble containing anything more than 4 to 5 users a time. Then, there was the interior design of the gym. The plain yellow walls seemed to be a world apart from the rest of the hotel and a random wall painting only made it seem like Wangz was trying to make the gym “boutique” to no avail. Furthermore, the lack of any windows except a tiny horizontal one made the gym feel even smaller – to the dismay of the claustrophobic.  Thankfully, despite these physical flaws, the gym still does an adequate job in terms of reliability. After, a gym is for guests to stay fit, burn off the excess calories gained by sampling the plethora of local delicacies and also to de-stress. To start things off, a nice looking rack of towels and complimentary bottled water was available, contributing to the hygiene level of the gym and the comfort of guests. Not every hotel gym offers such amenities and I applaud Wangz Hotel for providing them even in such a small gym.

Fortunately, the gym does have standard equipment fitted into it, despite its size. There was a treadmill, bench, multi-purpose machine, cycling machine, free weights and yoga mats available for use and I believe that these equipment are just sufficient to satisfy the needs of any normal guests. There was definitely effort in setting up the gym as the flooring was slightly cushioned so as to soften the impact of dumbbells. I would not want to stay for long in the gym but credit must be given for effort and the equipment is still sufficient should you want to get a light workout.

Given the small land space of the hotel and bearing in mind that Wangz Hotel is confined to this barrel shaped structure, I was not surprised to learn that there was no swimming pool. Although it would have been a great pleasant surprise if the hotel had one, I wasn’t disappointed as well.

Dining

There are two dining options available for guests in the form of a restaurant – Nectar, and a rooftop lounge.

The Halo sky lounge was very quiet when I went there for a drink on my first night. I was the only customer there and the attentive staff served me instantly. The staff were friendly and accommodating, letting me choose my seat – I eventually settled for a seat by the edge of the building, offering me a good view of Singapore. The drinks were also reasonably priced and you can get some uniquely Singapore drinks such as the renowned Singapore Sling. While the view wasn’t fantastic, it was still adequate and appropriate for a quiet night – fit for a busy businessman or tired tourist who just wants some tranquility for the moment. You can observe and appreciate the beauty of Marina Bay Sands from afar, or marvel at Singapore’s government owned housing flats, with the modern and popular “Pinnacle at Duxton” housing flats within your view. I definitely had a calm amnd relaxing tine at the lounge and there was nothing I disliked. However, some possible issues that caught my attention was the rather dim environment which not all guests may like and from my observation, there were only 2 staff at that point in time, which made me question their ability to cope should there be a crowd at the lounge.

The main restaurant – Nectar – is located prominently at the main lobby. It features a contemporary design and the use of white marble table tops and colorful chairs does help in brightening up one’s day. To my pleasant surprise, the breakfast comprised a much wider spread of dishes than I had expected. Hot foods include local breakfast dishes such as porridge, dim sum and noodles, while those with Western tastes can opt for cereals, cold cuts and a cheese platter. What impressed me even more was that despite the shoe-box size of the restaurant, the kitchen also works hard to ensure that guests have a filling breakfast by churning out eggs made to each individual’s taste. You can order eggs cooked in different styles  – omelettes, scrambled etc – and filled with different ingredients such as cheese or tomatoes. I must applaud Wangz Hotel for catering such a good service despite its small size and limited number of guests. This simple addition, coupled with the somewhat luxurious buffet spread confirmed my impression that the management of Wangz Hotel does indeed pay attention to detail.

Our Take

Wangz Hotel Singapore is not a luxury hotel, but it is a 4 star boutique hotel which offers top class service. Located off-city, it provides guests with a quiet environment and comfortable stay and tourists will enjoy the numerous local experiences they can have around the Outram estate. Though I will not recommend the hotel to very busy business travelers who rise extremely and rest extremely late due to lack of transport options, Wangz Hotel is definitely worth a stay for those who wish for a unique experience in Singapore. Its unconventional location offers opportunities to discover and learn more about the heritage of Singapore and try some delicacies which are truly local. I must add that tourists who frequent Singapore ought to lodge at Wangz at least once for the amazing experience and locals planning a staycation should definitely consider Wangz. Overlook and space constraint and lack of facilities, Wangz Hotel is definitely a beautiful place to be in.
