Room

For this trip, I booked the Crystal Club Deluxe Room, which is 28 square metres small. This enabled me to enjoy the privileges of the Crystal Club lounge, which I will talk about later on in the post. The modest size does not surprise me, as the cost of land along Singapore’s prime district of Orchard is really high. Despite its small size, the room felt really welcoming. The warm, neutral colour tones give the room a rather homely feeling.

One unmissable thing is the large artwork hanging over the beds. The artwork definitely adds some class to the room and livens things up. So, instead of just a plain boring room, you will get to live in a room that has been well designed.

Another thing that I enjoyed about the room was the spectacular views of the entire Orchard road. Being in the club room, I was located on the 10th floor, which also the second highest floor of the hotel. Thus, I had somewhat better views facing the city. At night, you will get to enjoy the beautiful and well lighted Orchard Road through the floor to ceiling windows. However, due to privacy issues (I would assume) or for aesthetic reasons, the windows had diagonal frostings which impeded a sizeable portion of my view. This reduced a great deal of visibility and the view would definitely have been more impressive without these frostings.

I must also commend the fact the the rooms seems to have excellent noise isolation. Upon reaching Grand Park Orchard, you will notice a gigantic screen placed along the exterior of Knightsbridge building, blasting out cacophonous advertisements that can be heard along Orchard road. Surprisingly, the room was so well isolated from this noise that I couldn’t even hear the sounds of vehicles resounding from the road below!

The bed area was kept very neat and tidy with clean sheets on the bed. The space is free from clutter, and I liked the fact that the bedside table was very simple and well-kept.

As seen from the picture, the on;y item on the table was a tiny alarm clock that was completely wireless. Thus, even though the table was small, there was still sufficient space for me to place my personal items.

The super single beds were soft and quite comfortable, with two pillows on each bed. There is definitely sufficient space on each bed for the average grown man. However, I felt that the pillows were too flat and if used individually, guests would find them rather uncomfortable. However, stack the, up and you will get a much more comfortable head rest, and this was just what I did.

Grand Park Orchard also seeks to further enhance the experience of every guest by providing a pillow menu that can be requested at the reception. The menu offers a selection of pillows to cater to guests with different needs, such as snoring problems.

This is definitely an added luxury, one that many guests would appreciate having. After all, it guarantees that the sleeping need of every guest can be met and this should be the case fro every 5 star hotel.

One unique aspect of Grand Park Orchard would be the provision of an in-room smartphone named “Handy”. Handy is a Google Nexus phone, capable of providing unlimited 3G usage, local calls and IDD calls to 27 different different countries at no cost at all!

The hotel even added a personal touch to Handy, by displaying a personalised welcome message when I turned Handy on. Handy is indubitably one of the best additions to the hotel, as it brings about a great deal of convenience, especially for tourists. Even locals who are spoilt for choice on what to eat or where to shop will find handy useful, as it is preloaded with a ton of suggestions, ranging from top foods to eat, to the best places in Singapore to shop. This unique feature definitely makes Grand Park Orchard stand out from the other 5 star hotels along Orchard Road.

There was a fully equipped pantry area, which was rather well stocked. Guests can expect to enjoy free coffee and tea, where as the mini bar was stocked with a variety of soft drinks, juices and beers. What the mini bar lacked was a selection of liquor such as vodka and whisky. However, with 2 bars for guests to choose from, a vast in-room selection of alcohol would be superfluous.

There are also an array of snacks to choose from, including potato chips and peanuts. Though all these are chargeable items, the prices aren’t as expensive as most other hotels.

To complement the drinks and snacks, there is a comfortable sofa placed at the corner of the room by the windows, complete with a coffee table and reading materials. Guests can look forward to relaxing on the sofa while enjoying a cup of their favourite drink while reading up about the hotel or the surrounding area from the booklets and magazines provided in the room. However, the sofa does feel a little flimsy, especially the foot rest, which was shaky. This gave me the feeling that the sofa was there more to complement the room aesthetically rather than to provide additional comfort to guests.

Despite confined spaces of the room, a work desk was still included and it was smartly placed against a corner. so as to take up as little space as possible. Surprisingly, the work desk blended in well to the room and it definitely did not make the room more claustrophobic. However, the work desk was not as well equipped as you would expect from a business hotel.

There was only a pen and a notepad available, and there was no support for HDMI or VGA. This is also one of the reasons why the hotel might not be the most suitable for businessmen, as they would not be able to carry out discussions or presentations in the room. That being said, the hotel does provide free high speed internet for all guests. Those who wish to get some work done in the room will definitely find it a breeze as the internet is really reliable and fast.
