Bathroom
The bathroom was luxurious and well planned. It was spacious as well, and this clearly shows that bathroom space was not sacrifice for room space. Guests also have the choice of using either a reasonably sized shower area, or the bathtub, which is definitely large enough to fit even 2 persons. The orange marbling used almost throughout the entire bathroom also gave the area an air of luxury, though it does get a little boring after some time. Generally, I would say that the bathroom was simple and pleasant to use, but it did not really meet my expectations for a 5 star hotel, as I expected something more contemporary or luxurious.
The complimentary  toiletries provided were also very simple and basic, and it was nothing more than I would expect from any reasonable hotel. The shampoo and bath gel were packaged ordinarily and were not from any known brand. Also, additional toiletries such as mouthwash or loofah provided.
The architecture of the bathroom was acceptable and I really enjoyed the luxury of space – something that is increasingly hard to find nowadays. However, I was dearly disappointed with the amenities present. After all, shouldn’t a 5 star hotel place more emphasis on guests’ comfort and convenience?
Facilities
There was an outdoor pool in the hotel, and a commendable point is that the pool is actually heated. This saves guests from the pain of having to endure absurdly cold temperatures upon entering the pool.
However, the pool area really just looked and felt like a public pool, as there wasn’t much greenery or architecture wonders to amuse guests.
Plain and boring would be how I want to describe the pool area. But there was one major boon due to the lack of attractions in the pool area – which is an empty or almost empty pool every time you wish to use it. This is indeed true, as the pool area was empty when I visited it at different timings.
There were several planning flaws of the pool area, and one of them would be the sunbeds. I am sure that pretty much everyone that visits the pool area would be looking forward to a time of relaxation and fun, be it in the pool itself or on the sunbeds. Sure enough, the sunbeds were comfortable, but what I could not understand was why there was a shelter built over the sunbeds! This construction paradox made me feel as though the hotel did not place much consideration into practicality and enhancing guests’ experiences.
Furthermore, the pool was only opened from 6am to 6pm daily. As many of the hotel’s guests would be businessmen with appointments in the CBD area, their free time would probably be in the evening or at night. Thus, they probably would not get a chance to even enjoy the pool. However, should you get to utilise the pool, the quiet and peaceful ambience due to a lack of crowd is fantastic for some alone time.
Our take
Intercontinental Adelaide was rather disappointing for me in several aspects, mainly their sparse amenities and their old fashioned concept of luxury. Hence, I feel that guests should not enter the hotel with very high expectations. However, the location, indubitably, is convenient for most businessmen as the hotel is indeed located in the CBD area. Also, the natural beauties such as River Torrens adjacent to the hotel is a major selling point. Intercontinental Adelaide would still be  good choice for tourists looking for a quiet lodging place which is close to numerous of Adelaide’s attractions.
