Room

For this stay, I booked a club room, which entitled me to a slightly larger room and access to the club lounge on the 16th floor. I was allocated room 1304, which is on the 13th floor. The floor plan of the hotel is rather similar to that of most other hotels, but the setting is vastly different. To get to my room, I had to walk through this “outdoor” (but sheltered) walkway that overlooks the nearby flats. There were some rooms located along this walkway and the doors of the rooms were designed such that it looked like part of a tree. Such a design is unique and unseen in other hotels and once again, makes guests feel like they are living in nature. However, there are also some problems caused by this design. For instance, in trying to make the walkway feel and look special, the I feel that the hotel has neglected other key points such as safety. The railings along the walkway are made up of numerous vertical bars only. This does not provide adequate safety to guests passing through and especially to little children that might be able to unintentionally squeeze through the bars. Also, this design is too ‘open’ and some guests would not enjoy walking through such a ‘dangerous’ path every time to get to their rooms. Furthermore, even though the walkway is extensively sheltered, it is still likely that rainwater could splash in especially if the wind is strong. In view of the increasing ferocity of the monsoon rains, this could become a frequent occurrence and the slippery floor would pose a danger to all. However, there are blinds on one side of the the walkway that hotel staff will lower in the event of heavy rain or strong winds, and this would minimise the likelihood of such problems occurring.

Upon stepping into my room, I was blown away by the beauty of it. The room itself was only about 28-30 square metres, which is very small considering it is a club room. However, I did not feel the space constraint at all as the heavy usage of tall floor to ceiling windows and the carefully planned placement of mirrors made the room feel spacious and welcoming.

The room is encased in wood, with wooden doors, cupboard, desk and even bed frame. The light time of the wood they used seems to lift one’s mood upon entering the room. This Eco friendly design looks beautiful and it made me feel as though I was living in a fantasy tree house.

My room had a fantastic unimpeded views of Singapore’s skyline, which boasts a spectacular view at night and the lush green space of Hong Lim park. Not only will you be able to see the Gardens by the Bay, you might even be able to catch the laser light displays on Marina Bay Sands occasionally!

There were automatic day and night blinds attached to the windows so guests can choose too wet the intensity of the sun by pressing a switch to articulate the day blind, or to fully darken the room by using the night blind.

Located right next to the windows is the sofa, which offers a comfortable crib for those who wish to relax after a day of touring, shopping and working. As all non-alcoholic drinks and tidbits are free, you will be able to snack comfortable without extra expense.

The room came with a soft king sized bed that will offer guests a comfortable rest throughout the night. There are also 2 pillows available for selection and guests can choose to use either the harder one or softer one according to personal preference. The bed sheets were clean and I could tell that the room was well maintained.
However, as the hotel is trying to be as Eco friendly as possible, the room only has a couple of small spot lights on the ceiling. As such, the bed area gets really dim during the night and becomes unsuitable for doing on reading in the bed. Thankfully guests still have the comfortable sofa which is still adequately lighted up even at night.

The room also had a wooden work table. The table was neat and neat, albeit slightly small sized. Nonetheless, it should be able to fit all the relevant documents that a businessman would need to use. Attached to the wall by the side of the table is also a range of charging and connection ports.

There are USB ports that allows guests to charge there mobile devices without having to spend time locating an empty power socket. It also removes the hassle of having to constantly shift around so as to access one’s phones and work documents. Also, HDMI and VGA are supported and businessmen will be able to make use of that function to give presentations on the TV screen. Even usual guests can choose to use the functions to play a movie they have on their computer on the TV instead. However, what the work desk lacked was a stationery kit. Due to it’s proximity to the CBD area, many businessmen will be staying in this hotel and I feel that a proper stationery kit is necessary to provide ease and convenience, and enhance the experience for them. The only stationery available was a pen, made out of a recycled cardboard material and it felt flimsy and cheap.

A nice touch added to the room was the free non-alcoholic drinks in the mini bar and the tidbits. There was also a coffee machine for guests, complete with coffee capsules, coffee powder, tea bags, sugar and milk. Not to mention a range of alcoholic drinks which are however, chargeable. All these amenities were neatly stored in a wooden cupboard with sliding drawers beside the work desk, which made the room seem compact and neat and this effectively removes any clutter from the room. Furthermore, water is complimentary and is provided in 2 glass bottles. This helps to avoid wastage of plastic bottles. However, this might be slightly more inconvenient than the conventional plastic bottles which are lighter and more mobile, that most other hotels provide.
